Generic Skills
Workshops in professional scientific communication
Research is not possible without communication. Writing a complex thesis, research reports, preparing manuscripts to be submitted to peer-reviewed international research journals, designing posters and oral contributions with or without visual support for presentations in front of international experts or make an active contribution to an ongoing research discussion are key generic skills of any successful researcher.
Doctoral researchers at RUB are fully integrated into the complex process of scientific communication - from the process of raising the necessary support for the research projects (grants, proposals) to the publication of research papers and the communication of research results to researchers from their own as well as other disciplines. To support their communication skills, RUB Research School offers high-level training courses in scientific communication. They support the professional as well as personal development of doctoral researchers, encourage them to realize their potentials and support the engagement, influence and impact of their research knowledge for a successful integration in the scientific community. According to the individual needs and interests they can choose between three kinds of generic skills courses:
- Scientific Writing
- Scientific Presentation
- Professional (Scientific) Communication
The language of the workshops is - depending on the contents - English or German.
The workshops in scientific communication are acknowleged for the doctoral training programme of the RUB Research School Certificate. The CPs you can gain for each workshop are indicated in the course descriptions.
Please notice that have to be registered to RUB Research School Database to get your login data for Doc-In before you can register for the workshops.

Workshop Registration - Short Guideline
Please only register for the workshop(s) you really would like to participate in: you can register for 2 workshops in 2013.
Your registration will be confirmed by a system email and will be documented under "Myseminars" (you need to be logged in to DocIn to see your registrations).
You are also welcome to register for the waiting list in case a workshop is already booked.
You will be informed right in time by a confirmation email about your workshop participation (including all organisational details).
Important: Please actively unregister online in "Myseminars" as soon as you know that you will not participate in a workshop you are registered for - please unregister at the latest 10 days before the workshop starts. Your position will automatically be offered to a doctoral researcher on the waiting list or will be re-published on the website.
! Please note: Due to the experiences of the last years we kindly ask you to organise your workshop participation right in time, track the workshops you are registered for and take care that you will participate. We kindly ask you to unregister early enough (at the latest 10 days before the workshop starts) if you cannot participate. In case you do not unregister from the workshops early enough or do not show up at the workshop we will ask you to take over a cost sharing in case your position has to be left unused (the workshop positions are just too expensive). Only if we share this responsibility we can deal with the vacancies efficiently.
If you have questions please contact Dr. Ursula Justus.
