Science College 2007

Interdisciplinary Dialog or Clash of Cultures?
We would like to invite all fellows of the Ruhr-University Research School to our first Science College.
We will start on July 2, 2007 at 2pm in the Audimax and will finish on July 3, 2007 at 1pm.

Exchange Across Disciplinary BoundariesFirst of all we will give you a short explanation about this new instrument Science College: Most of the offered scientific conferences are strongly disciplinary and only few events provide an insight into science and "language" of other disciplines. This Science College will bring together all doctoral candidates and confront them with topics interesting for all. Of course these themes are oriented on state of the art research but offering and calling for an inter- and transdisciplinary discussion. Priority has the exchange across disciplinary boundaries. This aim will be the topic of our first Science College. We would like to work out together with you why the dialog between the scientific cultures is difficult or seems to be difficult?

Open Minded Thinking
We are proud of having won Prof. Dr. Dr. Gerhard Vollmer over from the University in Braunschweig. As Philosopher and Physicist he is a "pontifex" among the different scientific cultures and acquainted for his works about evolutionary cognitive science. Moreover experienced scientists of each section of the Ruhr-University will give a short lecture visualising the practical dimension of the disciplinarity but enabling an extravagating discussion with all participants.
Naturally we would like to involve you actively. In the afternoon of the first day interdisciplinary questions will be worked on in workshops. The results and conclusions will be shortly presented on the next day.
With this event we would like you to encourage thinking open minded against the background of putting your self-conception as a scientist.
Furthermore this first Science College will give you the opportunity to meet all doctoral candidates. With a common dinner and the band "Coversaki" we would like to support you "very unscientifically".

Take Part
The training programme of the Research School regulates one participation within three years but you are welcome to take part in the Science College several times. This Science College reflects the official start-up of the Research School and we would be very happy about a lively participation.

Please attend the whole meeting. It is not possible to take part in specific agenda highlights.
