Course description:

The workshop Basic Scientific Presentation mainly focuses on the presentation of research results of your PhD project to the scientific community.

A successful academic career demands verbal presentation skills ? skills that help communicate your scientific results to a scientific audience. To be successful in scientific presentation means that you should be able to present your results in a style that is both professional and authentic. An excellent presentation depends on several interdependent factors. The training sessions not only introduce but practice these factors and help you to give your presentations in academic settings such as work group meetings, in front of a defense committee or at conference sessions. You learn to optimise your personal presentation strategies by analyzing and working out different aspects of performing in front of an audience.

After three days working on and with your own individual presentations you should have recognised and increased your range of action in the public presentation of research results. You are able to deliberately decide on performance strategies that best match the respective setting and support your communication goals.

In detail the workshop deals with:
•    preparing a presentation
•    analysing the context
•    using visual aids (please note that the use of slides is discussed outside presentation settings)
•    adapting contents to the audience
•    body talk
•    stage fright and difficult situations during the presentation
•    academic discussion strategies
