Course description

Risk and uncertainty characterize research careers at the postdoctoral stage. Taking an international perspective, this workshop raises pivotal issues in developing a sustainable career in research and getting funded. It aims to help to assess the current postdoctoral position, to clarify both career aspirations as well as longer-term research goals and to develop a road map for achieving them in the individual setting.

The workshop also provides essential guidance on exploiting research funding opportunities effectively. Participants will learn how to apply key elements of strategy to develop their research agenda, identify a portfolio of funding opportunities to be pursued in the coming years and manage the grant life cycle systematically to build their resources and capabilities in an increasingly competitive research environment.

By participating in the programme you will be better equipped to:

  • respond to the evolving roles and responsibilities of a researcher as the career progresses
  • understand the broader context in which higher education and research institutions operate
  • apply strategic approaches to advancing your career as a researcher
  • develop a competitive research agenda
  • identify and exploit funding opportunities effectively
  • move from smaller to larger grants
