Report From 1 November 2023 to 29 February 2024, I spent four months in Brussels as a Visiting Scholar at KIK-IRPA (The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage), where I was based at the Centre for the Study of the Flemish Primitives, headed by Bart Fransen.
The KIK-IRPA is the leading research centre for Flemish and Dutch art and a unique environment for scientific exchange.
For my research stay at this institute I have targeted three goals.
First goal: Insights from the current restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece
Second goal: Exchange and insights in laboratories
Third goal: Establishing a professional network for information exchange and future projects

In addition to these goals, I was motivated to progress my PhD thesis on the written motifs in Jan van Eyck's paintings and to discuss the theses with the experts there. I was able to realise this in two lectures, which I gave once in December in Ghent to the conservators of the Ghent Altarpiece and once in February to the members of the KIK-IRPA.
I was also involved in the open access digitisation project of the study centre (Friedlander Database) and took care of the input of the group of artists around Albrecht van Ouwater. At the same time, the study centre was preparing an exhibition on the Flemish artist Dieric Bouts, which opened in Leuven in February. This gave me the opportunity to participate in various events and decision-making processes. Both gave me the opportunity to gain further insights.
