Report | Thanks to PR.INT, I was given the opportunity to carry out a research stay at the renowned Chalmers University of Thechnolgy. This enabled me to use the laboratories and the equipment and to exchange ideas with the researchers there. The aim of the stay was to prepare grinding chips of valuable high-allyoed steels heavily contaminated with cutting oils for reuse in powder metallurgy. The expertise of the Energy and Materials group was essential for this. A vacuum-supported vapor degreasing system was set up on a laboratory scale. By using a specially adapted non-toxic organic solvent, the grinding chips could be successfully de-oiled. The oil was then separated from the solvent by distillation. The collaboration subsequently leads to the publication of the results. The reusability of the oil and the solvent will be examined by the Energy and Materials group. At the Chair of Materials Technologies, I am carrying out sintering tests with the cleaned chips in order to investigate the possibility of a circular economy in tool production. |
