Report I recently had the opportunity to visit Tyler Cocker’s group (nanothz.com) at Michigan State University, where I gained insight into the application of terahertz scanning tunnelling microscopy (THz-STM). As part of my PhD project, which focuses on the development of broadband high-power THz sources and detectors, I was interested in exploring potential applications. To visit and learn from a pioneer in THz-STM was a big honor. I remain fascinated by the possibility of THz time-domain spectroscopy with sub-atomic resolution!
During my stay, I mostly contributed to the setup of the group’s second THz-STM system, working on both optical and engineering aspects. I am eager to see the new discoveries that this system will enable. My supervisor in Bochum, Clara Saraceno, and I are looking forward to future collaborations with Prof. Cocker’s group.
Notably, my visit took place during a challenging time for research in the US, with the Trump administration’s policies affecting the academic community. Despite these difficulties, I was impressed by the resilience and hospitality of my host university. Overall, my visit was an extremely valuable experience, and I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the work of Tyler Cocker’s team, exchange ideas and techniques and get to know the academic culture in the United States.
