Report The support of the International Mobility Programme of the RUB Research School enabled me to participate in the annual conference of the Contemporary and Historical Archaeology in Theory (CHAT) group, held at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao from November 6–9, 2025. The overarching topic of that year's conference was “hole,” or, in Basque, botxo, metaphorically referring to the spaces in between that contemporary and historical archaeology can help to bridge.

This thematic framework, which encouraged exploration of often-overlooked or marginalized aspects of archaeological research, provided an ideal opportunity for me to present and discuss my ongoing work on the archaeology of contemporary migration in the Eastern Mediterranean. Focusing on recent border crossings from Libya to Crete and to the small island of Gavdos, just south of Crete, I shared insights from my recent fieldwork. I aimed to demonstrate how archaeological fieldwork conducted with modest means can uncover previously unseen dimensions of modern migration. The discussion following my presentation—as well as the exchange with other archaeologists working on related topics—was highly productive and stimulating.
