Members of the Ombudsstelle with different scientific focus will explain the basic rules and principles of good scientific practice, will present the “Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice. Code of Conduct” (DFG) and will enable first practical experience by working on and discussing realistic cases.
The workshop will explore the relevance of research integrity and will explain the main objectives every researcher has to follow as well as to integrate into individual research practices and attitudes.
The workshop will exemplify by real showcases the differences and grey areas between good scientific practice, questionable research practice and scientific misconduct. In addition, the workshop will introduce the work of the Ombuds Office in dealing with scientific misconduct.
In the afternoon, you can practice and deepen your understanding of the guidelines of good scientific practice by working on and discussing realistic case studies.
Focussing on your perspectives as early career researchers the workshop will present and discuss the following topics:
- definitions of good scientific practice and scientific misconduct
- degrees and extent of scientific misconduct
- examples for responsible and irresponsible conduct of research
- data management for your research project
- authorship and the process of publication
- mentoring and supervision
- conflict management: how to prevent and how to deal with scientific misconduct
- case studies
You are most welcome to bring your interests and questions and discuss them with the Ombudspersons and the legal advisor of the Ombuds Office to gain clarity and certainty about the topics you are most interested in.

The members of the "Ombuds Office for Good Scientific Practice" at RUB, Prof. Dr. med. Ulf Eysel, Prof. Dr. Hanns Hatt, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kunze, and Prof Dr. Monika Schmitz-Emans, hold professorships in Medicine, Natural Science, Engineering, and the Humanities and as well as their legal advisor Annika von Hof have longstanding experience in counseling and dealing with questions of good scientific practice.
