This workshop is aimed at researchers from all research fields who want to understand how to handle personal data in their research. It provides basic data protection knowledge on the collection and use of personal data in order to support researchers in securing their own research from a data protection perspective at an early stage.

Course description
Research is free. However, the personal rights of participants must be respected when you use or intend to use personal data in your research. Data protection aims to protect such rights and gives you insights into the basic legal framework for collecting and using personal data for your own research. At the same time, the workshop addresses which legal requirements your own research must meet.

In the workshop, the requirements of the legislation will be worked out using examples. At the same time, all participants are invited to bring their own research-specific questions.

Topics include:

  • basic questions about personal data
  • important aspects for planning research with personal data
  • consents
  • anonymisation and pseudonymisation
  • data trusteeship, separation
  • design of survey instruments
  • special requirements in specific areas
