Course description

This is an activity-based workshop led by a theatre professional whose expertise is in helping researchers effectively communicate the importance and relevance of the work and the core message in the talk. The training helps you to deliver an academic presentation, in both an online and live setting, that bring across the core message of your research in a clear, structured and explicit way. Repetition is a key aspect of the training so that participants can strengthen the narrative, the emotional tone, and the physicality of the talk in order to define and support the speaker’s own dynamic style.

You will work on your individual presentation style, learn how to win over your audience and how to perform with confidence. You are welcome to bring your own style of presenting - from free presentation to written text and work with this. Constructive feedback from the trainer and the other participants will provide you with professional input and offer benchmarks to assess the effect of your presentations.

Throughout the three-day workshop, participants will be guided through interactive exercises to improve non-verbal communication, improve the ability to listen and react generously, and to integrate focusing techniques which empower the speaker. Attention will be given to breath and speech patterns, to strengthen both the ease and clarity of the speaker. Exercises include relaxation, intonation, pronunciation, tempo and text analysis.

On the first day in the online training, you will explore rhetorical techniques and stylistic devices that will help you to bring across your research in a clear and distinguished manner. You will develop strategies to reduce the complexity of your research in a structured way with the aim to communicate the key results and findings of your research convincingly and effectively. All participants meet in the morning session and then will be clustered in small groups in the afternoon for intensive presentation coaching.

On the second day, in a live setting, you will be divided into two groups working in either the morning or afternoon, to work on your non-verbal communication in front of an audience. You will learn to take control of breathing and voice, facial expression, gestures and body language.

On the third day, working in two groups, you will develop strategies to deal with difficult questions that might come up during the discussion.
