Doctoral researchers who are aiming for a position in the German industry after their doctorate. This workshop will prepare you for understanding the legal and organisational frameworks for working in German industry and will offer first insights into working cultures.

1st day: Salaries & Working Conditions - How to define an adequate salary and other contract conditions

In this seminar you will get to find out everything about salaries. You will see typical salaries for job starters and criteria which can influence the salary. We will have look on average income of men and women and explore the reasons for the differences. Subsequently, we will practice a salary calculation method you can use to determine a salary for a specific position. At the end various research options are introduced which you can use to find out more about a company internal salary structure.Finally, you will get to find out everything about other general conditions and legal guidelines when in work, for example hours of work, vacation days, overtime regulations and your “Probezeit”. Subsequently, you will learn more about work permits and their regulations.


2nd day: Work Culture – How to understand your (German) colleagues

To be considered as a professional team member you should be familiar with the German working cultural standards and their influence on the work sphere. In this seminar we will discuss the typical German way of working and working cultures within teams. Additionally, we will define the role of an employee and a teamleader. Based on practical examples we try to understand the perspectives of different cultures & roles and discuss possible solutions to avoid misunderstandings.



Heidi Störr: After her graduation in business studies she worked for several companies as a HR Specialist. Since 2012 she offers advice for German and international academic graduates.
