This workshop is particularly helpful for researchers who would like to qualify as reviewers to evaluate research proposals - for the RUB-RS PLUS programme or other funding lines.

Course description: 

If you are asked to evaluate a research proposal it is a door opener to the inner circle of your discipline and important component of your career in science. But how do you write a competent and meaningful evaluation? Which criteria do you have to apply?

The participants will gain insight into the principles of the funding system and in evaluation procedures. They will reflect their role as reviewers and work out principles of good scientific praxis. The workshop gives young researchers the rare opportunity to train the preparation of an evaluation with professional feedback keeping confidentiality and anonymity.

By the workshop you can qualify as reviewer of the proposals for funding within the framework of the RUB RS PLUS as real case examples. By the switch in perspective you also will get insight into the strengths and weaknesses of research proposals which will help you in return when writing your own proposals.

The most important topics of the workshop are:

• principles of extramural funding
• good scientific praxis in proposal evaluation
• evaluation criteria - within the discipline and beyond
• validation and evaluation of additional information  and letters of recommendation
• writing a review
• role as reviewer

The workshop will answer the following questions:

• How is meaningful evaluation structured? What should an evaluation contain?
• Which evaluation criteria should I use and how do I apply them?
• How do I proceed in the evaluation of a proposal, being a reviewer of the same field as the applicant or being from a completely different field?
• How do I handle additional information of a proposal? Shall I evaluate letters of recommendation? If so, how?
• How do I handle my role as reviewer?
• Which role does my evaluation play within the decision making process of funding?

Trainer:

Dr. Wilma Simoleit combines in her professional experience the different perspectives of the extramural funding system. As a scientist she worked for several years in Germany and the USA and attracted successfully extramural funds for her position as well as for project support.  From research she changed to research management and research funding. She gained longtime experience in the support of national and international research at the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Deutsche Krebshilfe.
