For doctoral researchers in all research fields | Level all
Online Workshop
Date: 23.-24.11.2026
Time: 09:00 at Day 1 - with 6 x 1-1,5 hours online meetings over the two workshop days + recorded content between online classes and before the workshop
Trainer: Dr. Brian Cusack
Language: English
Participants: max. 10 persons
Credit Point: acknowledged with 1 CP for the doctoral training programme of RUB-RS Certificate
Participants are asked to submit a published research article of interest from their own research field and a sample of their own writing comprising an Abstract and Title (max. 250 words) either from a manuscript currently in preparation or describing their research so far.
Course description
This two-day workshop enables participants to communicate their research clearly and effectively. Through numerous writing examples and relevant exercises, they learn how to describe their research findings in a publication containing a flowing narrative with a clear “take home message”. The workshop teaches participants not only to target their publication to a specific audience but also direct their day-to-day research using the writing process.
Participants learn how to:
- Apply five key principles of scientific writing.
- Target their publication to a specific audience by “framing” their research story for increased impact.
- Construct a memorable “take-home message” by connecting all parts of the paper in a flowing narrative.
- Use the writing process to guide & understand their own research.
- Overcome writer’s block by combatting perfectionism and procrastination.
- Evaluate published articles for their writing style and not just their science.
- Develop a clear “road-map” to write next articles in an efficient and painless manner.
Schedule: Live and recorded content
The workshop will consist of both synchronous live content and asynchronous recorded content (with the split being roughly 60% live and 40% pre-recorded videos). The live sessions will be offered over the course of 2 days in 6 online classes totalling 8.5 hours (Zoom sessions of 1.25-1.5 hours). All recorded content will be available to view for two weeks in advance of the workshop and one week thereafter. Participants should aim to view the majority of recorded content before the workshop.
Participants are welcome to also attend the workshop on “AI Literacy in Scholarly Writing”.
Trainer: Dr. Brian Cusack provides high-level training workshops in Germany and abroad since 2012. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics from Trinity College, Dublin. He completed his first postdoc at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris and conducted post-doctoral research in evolutionary genomics at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin.
