Course description
This workshop concentrates on the process of writing an academic manuscript for publications in peer-reviewed journals. Choosing an audience, creating a story, explaining complex data and formulating convincing arguments will be discussed. Additionally, detailed information will be given regarding the content of each manuscript section as well as the peer review process. Workshop participants will be instructed in the formal and organizational aspects of academic writing and train their competency with exercises.
At the end of the workshop participants will:
- have a detailed overview of the structure of a scientific manuscript
- learn to build an interesting story from their data
- improve their argumentation skills for writing convincingly
- improve their writing structure and flow
- be familiarized with the publishing process.
Methods
Trainer-input and lecture coupled with practical exercises and group work.
Participants requirements
A computer with a camera and microphone.
Participants should bring:
- A 250-300 word abstract on their own work.
- A paper from their field (no reviews please).
Specific workshop focus:
- structure of a scientific manuscript
- contents of each manuscript sections
- understanding the publishing process
- working on own writing samples (submission before workshop)
Trainer
Melanie Lynn Conrad PhD, was born in Vancouver, Canada, where she studied biology at the University of British Columbia. With many years of experience in science, her expertise includes paper and grant writing. Presently, she leads a reproductive immunology research group at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
