Wr_13: ONLINE Getting Published by Mastering Peer Review
For doctoral researchers in all research fields | Level all
Online Workshop
Date: 14.-15.10.2024
Time: 09:00 at Day 1 - with 6 x 1-1,5 hours online meetings over the two workshop days + recorded content between online classes and before the workshop
Trainer: Dr. Brian Cusack
Language: English
Participants: max. 10 persons
Credit Point: acknowledged with 0,75 CP for the doctoral training programme of RUB-RS Certificate
Course description
The workshop guides participants how to deal with the peer review process as authors but also as potential reviewers using a practical approach that explores the roles of the author, the reviewer and the editor.
Following the workshop as authors of your own publications
- you will be able to engage the interest of the journal editor with a cover letter
- you will also be skilled in responding comprehensively and courteously to reviewers' comments.
Taking over the role of future reviewers,
- you will know how to critically evaluate a research article and matching journal standards
- to phrase criticism in a constructive review that benefits the scientific process.
By integrating both roles the workshop supports you in advancing professional skills for your own academic writing: Learning to address reviewers' comments does not only increase chances of getting published but also enhances the ability to reflect critically about your own publications.
Exercises in the workshop promote an author-reviewer dialogue that is scientific and constructive rather than personalised & nit-picking. Common myths regarding peer review are re-evaluated using published evidence from the literature and common ethical issues in peer review will be explored.
Participants who currently have a manuscript under review can have the reviews and their author response considered for discussion during the workshop.
All workshop participants will receive an electronic workshop manual. This manual serves as a permanent reference and is a copy of the slides presented in the videos and live sessions. You will also receive an electronic exercise book.
Workshop organisation: live online meetings and recorded content
The workshop will consist of both synchronous live content and asynchronous recorded content (with the split being roughly 50% live and 50% pre-recorded). The live content in online meetings will give everyone a chance to actively engage in the conversation by sharing your thoughts and opinions. The most important workshop exercises will also be held during live discussions. The recorded content gives you a lot of flexibility and can be viewed whenever suits you best.
Workshop schedule
The live sessions will be offered over the 2 workshop days in 6 online meetings à 1-1.5 hours (totalling 8 hours). Most recorded content will be available to view in advance of the live workshop sessions. You will view some recorded content in the time between online classes.
