RUB Research School

Where Our Research Is Done

All Research Fields & an Affinity for Interdisciplinary Approaches

As an international prospect, you most likely want to know if your specific research interest fits to RUB’s research opportunities. There is a good chance you find a research match at RUB, but look for yourself:

Research and Teaching in 21 Faculties

We are a fully-fledged university. Our 21 faculties with their many institutes and 450+ chairs cover all fields of research: Humanities, Social Sciences including Law and Business, Engineering Sciences including IT, Natural Sciences, and Life Sciences including Medicine and hospital cooperation. Here, the term "Faculty" is used for RUB’s disciplinary institutional units. The holder of the chair, i.e., a professor, leads a team of academic staff, administrative staff, technical staff and student assistants. In some cases, thematically related chairs are organised together in institutes and departments.

9 Interdisciplinary Research Departments on One Campus

We are also a one-campus university. Profiting from short ways, we stand for research beyond disciplinary boarders. Our nine Research Departments bring interdisciplinary approaches to a new level, complemented by cutting-edge research facilities: Cyber Security, Solvation Sciences, Materials Research, Neurosciences, Protein Research, Religious Studies, Plasmas, Subsurface Modeling, Closed Carbon Cycle Economy, you name it! And in most of them, the Humanities play a crucial role!

RUB Research School as Key Element for ECRs

As you can learn on this website, RUB Research School supports RUB's early career researchers in more general terms. RUB's Graduate Schools, Research Trainings Groups, EU Training Networks, and Junior Research Groups provide the best possible conditions for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers to grow scientifically in their specific research field. Here is a convenient overview.

Research Networks beyond university boarders

Benefit from a huge existing research network: The city of Bochum is home to seven institutions of higher education - a true UniverCity. As a member of the University Alliance Ruhr, we bundle our assets and resources with the other two universities of our region, and this particularly applies to the next generation of researchers at Research Academy Ruhr.

Ruhr-Universität Bochum also cooperates with numerous non-university research institutes, such as Fraunhofer, Leibniz Association, Helmholtz, or Max Planck Society. One of our PIs at RESOLV, Prof. Dr. Benjamin List of the Max Plack Institue für Kohlenforschung, recently won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry! Think big when it comes to realizing your research!

Knowledge Transfer: Entrepreneurship & Cooperation with Industry

RUB’s Worldfactory strengthens the transfer of scientific results into industrial enterprises and society. This innovative concept is the interface where studies, research, and industry meet. Enjoy the video in the right column to get a first impression!

Coming to Bochum also means joining Germany’s leading start up region! When it comes to transfer and founding projects, our colleagues at Worldfactory Start-Up Center got your back: Co-Workingspace, RUBMakerspace, and five Incubators (Chemistry, Smart Systems/Industry 4.0, Smart Health & Care, Materials, IT-Security)--all of it feeding the entrepreneurial spirit of the region. WorldfactoryInternational even offers their own funding lines for international researchers! Join in and let your ideas accelerate!
