Quick and Unbureaucratic Help

for doctoral & postdoctoral researchers affected by the war in Ukraine

Ruhr-Universität Bochum, together with its departments, institutes, and foundations, would like to make a contribution to easing the circumstances of young scientists at RUB who have been affected by the war in Ukraine. To provide you with fast and uncomplicated help, we advise you on bridging scholarships and offers with which you can continue your research at RUB or earn a living. We would be pleased to support you in any of the following situations, among others:

You have been temporarily employed at RUB and there is currently no possibility to return to your home country? You came to RUB after the outbreak of war and are looking for a research opportunity? You lost your laptop on the escape or your account is blocked? You or relatives in Ukraine who are urgently seeking protection are coming to Bochum and need help finding accommodation?

Emergency Assistance by "Gesellschaft der Freunde der RUB"

Scientists in urgent need as a result of the Ukraine war can receive flexible assistance, for example to finance accommodation, living expenses, health insurance, or similar basic needs.

Who can apply for support? 

Applications are open to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers who are individually affected by the Ukraine war and have a connection to RUB, i.e., who have been active at Ruhr-Universität. This might be the case in the context of a research stay, a cooperation, during their doctorate, or alike.

Scholarship Offers Ranging from 3 to 6 Months

  • RUB Research School announces three off-cycle PhD Exchange-Scholarships or a 3-6 month research stay at RUB. The scholarships are addressed to international PhD students in the context of an existing research cooperation and are endowed with a monthly amount of 1,000 €. Apply now for PhD Exchange
  • RESOLV, an interdisciplinary research project at RUB, finances research stays and visiting professorships of up to 6 months for Ukrainian scientists who can be hosted in one of the RESOLV research groups. The offer is addressed to researchers of all career stages, from doctoral researchers to visiting professors, with stipends ranging from €861 to €3,000 per month. Learn more here.
  • The Fedor-Stepun Program offers 3-4 month fellowships to at-risk doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from Russia and Ukraine. The program is designed to support researchers affected by the war in Ukraine or political persecution in Russia who had to leave their countries to continue their research. The fellowships include a workplace as well as mentoring at RUB and are intended to help them prepare proposals for longer-term research projects during their stay.
