Requirement: Participants will be required to bring a presentation to the workshop.

Course Description
In this workshop participants can level up and profile their presentation skills and also prepare for more demanding speaking situations. The workshop is offered for doctoral researchers with first presentation experiences in scientific/academic contexts (e.g., research groups, seminars, conferences).

Workshop content:

  • Presentation practice and 360-degree feedback: Deliver a shortened version of a significant presentation (e.g., for a conference, job interview, or dissertation defense). Receive 360-degree feedback from peers and the trainer.
  • Pre-workshop preparation: Learn about the 12-Parameter Model (by textATRIUM) via a pre-workshop video. This model explains speaker qualities, audience engagement, and content clarity.
  • Tricky or unexpected questions: Prepare for questions, even tricky ones. No matter how easy or difficult, there are strategies to deal with all sorts of questions.
  • individual post-workshop insights: Gain a clear understanding of your individual strengths and areas for improvement to enhance your presentation skills.

Trainer:
John Kluempers, PhD, is a native English speaker and has his doctorate in linguistics. Afterwards, he moved to Tokyo, Japan where taught at numerous colleges and universities. Upon returning to Germany, he actively used his voice for nearly a decade as a news and sports broadcaster for Deutsche Welle’s English service. Additionally, Dr. Kluempers is an expert for professional and scientific English and a member of Toastmasters International, an organization where people become better public speakers with theatre experience in addition.
