Media Studies

Prof. Dr. Henriette Gunkel has been Professor for Transformation of Audiovisual Media with a special focus on gender and queer theory at the Institute for Media Studies since 2019. Internationally, she has collaborated with the University of London, New York University, and the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. Drawing on her international research networks across Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America, her work engages the politics of time and extraction from a decolonizing, queer-feminist perspective. She is a current PI in the DFG Research Unit 5710 Infrastructure: Aesthetics and Supply.

Theory travels, but it doesn't travel without transformation. What interests me is how concepts shift shape when mobilized from different geopolitical positions—and what we learn from those shifts when we listen carefully

Professor Gunkel was selected as a Scout of the Henriette Herz Scouting Program in 2026. For more information, please refer to her website.
