Course description
A good presentation begins with good preparation to reflect the right way to present research. Participants work on techniques to develop the right presentation by answering questions like: What is my main message? How can I most effectively present my research material? What determines success? How can I make an impact? How can I present myself as a researcher?

Participants will define how to reach out to their audiences best and how to engage people listening to their talks. They work on creating effective slides to make the most out of their scientific presentations and define presentation strategies for a coherent and convincing talk. They will profile take home messages and advance their presentation style by giving talks with storytelling characteristics.

Beyond that, they learn how body language can help to strengthen presentations, both in stressing arguments and in authentically revealing their research personalities. The participants should afterwards reflect on their own way of presenting and how they present themselves in their talks.

In addition, participants will deal with discussions after talks. The participants will discover ways to deal with and profit from scientific discussions following presentations – also as a way to stand out as a competent researcher.

The workshop will support participants to develop a solid foundation of effective strategies to systematically prepare sound talks, improve their presentation skills, and increase their own self-perception. The participants will recognize their strengths and know how they can correct and improve critical parts of their presentations.

The workshop will deal with:

  • developing a presentation and slide strategy to reach goals
  • using storytelling strategies to make talks more accessible to the audience
  • using body language influentially and with success
  • taking questions, also difficult ones, in the follow-up discussion

With both trainer input and in small groups or pairs, a variety of tasks will give participants the chance to advance their knowledge and skills and to exchange experiences.
