Report Financial support from the RUB Research School PLUS enabled me to participate in the ECPR/EISA 8th Pan-European Conference on International Relations which was held 18-21 September in Warsaw. I attended the conference as a paper giver in a panel which was chaired by my Ph.D. supervisor professor Stefan Schirm of the Chair of International Politics (LSIP). Panel participants, primarily present and past research associates of the LSIP, were concerned with investigating domestic sources of European economic policy divergences. My paper focussed on the restructuring of EU financial market supervision in which I applied the societal approach to governmental preference formation, developed by professor Schirm, to investigate British and German policy divergences. In my dissertation, I also apply this approach to the same countries but use this to investigate what domestic sources determine these governments’ external trade policy positions and which implications these have with regard to EU preferential trade agreements with emerging market economies. The opportunity to present a theoretical part of my Ph.D. project on EU trade and the ability to extend this empirically to EU finance has significantly benefitted further progress of my dissertation. Equally, presenting my project to an internationally composed audience and obtaining valuable feedback from junior and senior researchers from a typical interdisciplinary background has provided me with significant input for my doctoral thesis. www.eisa-net.org
