Report | In the framework of my PhD work on tunneling induced ground movements using empirical, analytical and numerical solutions, I undertook a research stay with Prof. Andrew Whittle at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA (February/March 2018). In this project, we investigated the correlation between tunnel volume loss and surface volume loss during tunnel excavation by using different constitutive models in the framework of finite element method, and this correlation has been further applied to improve the empirical method. Finally the proposed equations have been validated on the basis of centrifuge test results. https://ajw-group.mit.edu/andrew-j-whittle |
