Report | The aim of the project was the mapping of mineral resources and connecting routes to the local and Greek settlements of the early 1st millennium BC in Sicily. During the 3-week stay I documented the landscape of the settlements and carried out an archaeological survey in the area of modern mining in the Mts. Peloritani and the Prov. Agrigento. In the vicinity of these recent sites, indications were found that the raw materials had been exploited for a long time. The data was then evaluated with GIS software to reconstruct possible transport routes. The data represent an important part of my dissertation, since the topic of raw materials has been little explored in classical archaeology. |
