Report The project involves theoretical and computer simulation studies of energy conversion processes in space and laboratory plasmas. One of the mechanisms of rapid energy conversion in plasmas is through a process called magnetic reconnection, whereby magnetic field energy is converted in plasma kinetic energy in the form of heating and charged particle acceleration. This physical process plays a central role in the evolution of solar flares and other high energy astrophysical phenomena. Advanced kinetic and fluid continuum models are developed and applied to the study of this phenomena. The 3D simulation simulation algorithms are adapted to take advantage of the increased computational power available on high performance computing platforms. In additional to yielding new insights into how the energy conversion process works in three dimensions, results of these models are used to assist in the interpretation of magnetic field and plasma data taken from recent multi-satellite measurements in the Earth's magnetosphere.
