From 15th to 18th of April, Dr. Snehasis Tripathy’s first visit as a RUB Research School VIP-grant holder took place. The focus of the visit were individual discussions with Prof. Tom Schanz and the doctoral students Dipl.-Ing. Hanna Haase, Abhishek Rawat, M.Sc. and Linzhi Lang, B.Sc. in order to introduce the respective Ph.D. topics to Dr. Tripathy. During the meetings, the Ph.D. students have got valuable advices from Dr. Tripathy regarding for future work. Summaries of the Ph.D. works of each student: Dipl.-Ing. Hanna Haase Abhishek Rawat, M.Sc. Linzhi Lang, B.Sc. On 24th/25th of February, the bilateral Indian-German workshop "New Generation Sensors for Unsaturated Soils and Water technology" was held at the Chair of Foundation Engineering, Soil and Rock Mechanics, Ruhr-Universität Bochum Coordinators were Prof. Dr. Tom Schanz, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Chair of Foundation Engineering, Soil and Rock Mechanics, Prof. Dr. Hauke Harms, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH (UFZ) Leipzig, Prof. Dr. D. N. Singh, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Department of Civil Engineering, and Prof. Arun Kansal, TERI University New Delhi. Dr. Snehasis Tripathy, Cardiff University (VIP grant holder) was invited as a keynote speaker. He stayed at Ruhr-Universität Bochum from 23rd to 26th of February, allowing for full participation at the workshop as well as for individual talks to the Phd-students supervised by him. The workshop has provided a platform for bringing together scientists and industrial companies from both countries to enhance the transfer of knowledge, research and development (R&D) activities in the field of Water Technology and Unsaturated Soils. The workshop consisted of several sessions: firstly, a common session of two invited lectures, followed by several parallel sessions, where main emphasis was given either to Water Technology or Unsaturated Soils. A guided visit of the laboratory of the Chair of Foundation Engineering, Soil and Rock Mechanics took place after the end of presentations of the first workshop day. The first workshop day has ended with a common dinner for all workshop participants. The second workshop day consisted of common session providing a summary of the first workshop day, followed by a parallel session of technical presentations and common final discussion with all workshop participants. The doctoral students Mr. Abhishek Rawat and Mr. Linzhi Lang co-supervised by Dr. Snehasis Tripathy have benefited from the workshop and the visit of Dr. Tripathy by various ways: (1) training of their presentation skills by preparing a technical presentation which was held by Mr. Rawat during the workshop, (2) further education by participation in the workshop and networking to other workshop participants, (3) individual scientific talks to Dr. Tripathy about their Phd-work. On 15th and 16th of September, the workshop "Effective stress in Multiphase Porous Media" with several international scientists was held at the Chair of Foundation Engineering, Soil and Rock Mechanics. Invited speakers gave talks and presented current and ongoing research in the field of effective stress. Theoretical background, experimental data sets and investigations on the level of microstructure were discussed under several individual point of views according to different research backgrounds. It was evident that there is still a need for discussion how to describe the effect of soil water interaction (in terms of suction) when dealing with the mechanical behaviour of partially saturated soils. All participants have appreciated the high input and passionate involvement of all speakers leading to fruitful and intensive discussions. The doctoral students Mr. Abhishek Rawat and Mr. Linzhi Lang co-supervised by Dr. Snehasis Tripathy have benefited from the workshop and the visit of Dr. Tripathy by participation in the workshop and listening to the high-level presentations and subsequent intensive scientific discussions, and by individual scientific talks to Dr. Tripathy about the progress of their PhD-work. Meeting Minutes Place: Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany Attendees Present: Prof. Tom Schanz Dr. Shehasish Tripathy Dr. Wiebke Baille Mrs. Hanna Haase Mr. Abhishek Rawat Mr. Lin Zhi Lang Dr. Snehasish Tripathy from Cardiff University, UK visited Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany from 12 April to 21 April 2017. Dr. Tripathy is co-supervisor of Mrs. Hanna Haase, Mr. Abhishek Rawat and Mr. Lin Zhi Lang under VIP program funded by research school. The focus of the visit was to discuss the results from ongoing PhD research works. In the frame of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of compacted expansive soil, detailed discussion were carried out. Mr. Rawat and Mr. Lang presented tests results for ongoing doctoral research work during the discussion. Dr. Tripathy will visit from 19th June to 22 June 2017 for the PhD defence of Frau Haase. |
