Visiting International Professor Lutgarde Vandeput / Host Christof Berns
From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Lutgarde Vandeput joined the Institute of Archaeological Studies as "Visiting International Professor". Lutgarde Vandeput directs the British Institute at Ankara, which is one of the most renowned international research institutions in Turkey in the field of archaeology (https://biaa.ac.uk/).

Lutgarde Vandeput herself is working on the history of the ancient city, especially in the Hellenistic and the Roman Imperial Periods. One of her central concerns is to better understand the diversity of urban living environments within the Roman Empire, thus critically questioning traditional ideas of a Romanization of the Mediterranean world. She has made a significant contribution to this especially with the Pisidia Survey Project she leads. In the multidisciplinary long-term project, characteristic locations of an entire region of ancient Turkey are comprehensively documented by surface prospections, and they are analyzed comparatively with regard to the question of specific social and cultural characteristics. Due to its spatially broad access, the project opens up an enormous amount of data which, like only a few comparable enterprises, enables a differentiated description of the settlement history of a region. Lutgarde Vandeput's contributions thus provide important ideas for a field of research on which colleagues as well as doctoral candidates of the Institute of Archaeological Studies work.

In her time as Visiting International Professor, Lutgarde Vandeput had several direct exchanges with Master students and doctoral candidates, attended graduate colloquia and offered a seminar. Christof Berns was part of the return visit program in Ankara where he gave a lecture on the Miletus project of RUB. Further activities developed in the program were a guest lecture by Lutgarde Vandeput in Bochum as well as an expert discussion on perspectives of archaeological research in Turkey with the colleagues working in this region. We are grateful to Research School Plus for supporting the exchange.

2016

April

Lutgarde Vandeput first visited the Institute for Archaeological Studies of RUB from 25 till 29 April 2016.

The visit allowed her to get to know all members of the academic staff at the institute, which made the wide range of specialist disciplines and the width of archaeological branches covered at the Institute for Archaeological Studies apparent. She met also Prof. Ünsal Yalçın from ‚Deutsches Bergbau-Museum’, who directs the excavations in the copper mines at Derekutuğun. Finally, she studied the collections of ancient and modern arts on the Campus and the Miletus archives that provide a wide range of options for the study of archaeology at Bochum.

This impression was reinforced during the ‘Absolventenkolloquium’ on 28.04, where PhD as well as some MA students presented their work. The topics varied from representations on ancient coins to the study of burial customs from the necropoleis of the ancient city at Iznik over work on various categories of small finds to research on monumental arches in Asia Minor. Being able to discuss the work of these students in a university setting was a real pleasure to Dr Vandeput, and very different from daily work at the BIAA.
The same evening, she gave a lecture entitled, ‚Städte und Kaiser am Beispiels Pisidiens in Kleinasien. Zeugnisse aus dem ‚Hinterland’. The theme fitted well within the spheres of interest of staff and students, which was translated into a lively discussion after the lecture.

The next morning, Dr Vandeput taught MA students the introductory seminar for a ‘Hauptseminar’ entitled ‘Ländliche Besiedlung im antiken Anatolien’.

July

From 13 t.e.m. 16th of July, Dr Vandeput returned to the Institute in Bochum to continue the seminar with the students.

December

Relatively soon after her visit to Bochum at the end of spring term 2016, Prof Berns came to Ankara for a brief visit in December 2016. Important aims of the visit were discussions on the excavation project at Miletus and using the research resources at the BIAA. In addition, Prof Berns gave a lecture, entitled ‘Miletus ‐ New Research on the urban space of an ancient commercial metropolis’ (https://biaa.ac.uk/event/lecture-miletus-new-research-on-the-urban-space-of-an-ancient-commercial-metropolis). The event was supported by the Gerrnan embassy to Ankara.

April 2017

The week from 17 to 21 April 2017 once again brought Dr Vandeput to the Institute at Bochum. On 20.04.2017, an informal brainstorming session, entitled ‘Fachgespräch: Perspektiven Archäologischer Forschung in der Türkei’ took place. Experts on the archaeology of Turkey from the institute for archaeological studies in Bochum including Prof. Berns, Prof Ü. Yalçin, Dr G. Yalçin and Dr Huy exchanged views on a variety of topics with Dr Veli Köse from Hacettepe in Ankara via Skype, who represented views from Turkish academia and Dr Vandeput. A variety of themes that could form topics for future workshops or collaborative projects were discussed.

During the same week, the first week of spring term 2017, an ‚Absolventenkolloquium’ for which PhD students whose topics concentrated on Asia Minor were invited to present their work. This provided the opportunity to get a sense of progress realised by those that had been working on their topics for a longer period and to discuss their plans for further work. It also provided the opportunity for first impressions and initial conversations on newly started research.

Meanwhile, Dr Vandeput has become second supervisor to one of the PhD students at Bochum who is working on monumental gateways and their significance in the context of ancient cities and city planning in Asia Minor, a study that she is am following with great interest.

July 2018

July 2018 brought Dr Vandeput again to Bochum. During her six-day stay from 12 July onward, she had the chance to discuss progress with PhD students working on Asia Minor. On 16 July, a ‚Milet-Kolloquium’ took place, where students and staff members presented their on-going work on Miletus. A lively discusion followed each of the presentations with students and staff exchanging suggestions, questions and their views on specific elements of the research under discussion.

Dr Vandeput found the opportunity to work with students and especially PhD students extremely rewarding, because it is very different from the situation at her home institution, the British Institute at Ankara. At the same time, her presence provided an opportunity for the students to profit from an external point of view on the archaeological topics they are working on. Dr. Vandeput as well as colleagues and students from RUB very much appreciated the opportunities offered by the ‘Visiting International Professorship’.
