Report | In the framework of my PhD thesis I conducted a final field campaign in the active volcanic crater of Mount St. Helens to investigate volcano-ice interactions. During my research stay I had the chance to collect final data including thermal images and aerial photographs. These data are significant to a) obtain more information about heat fluxes in the volcanic crater and for comparison with data from former years, and b) create orthophotos and apply photogrammetric methods in order to investigate the lava dome that has built up in the center of the volcanic crater. Moreover, this allows a detailed analysis of how the crater glacier and the lava dome interact. The crater of Mount St. Helens hosts one of the last expanding glaciers worldwide, thus making this place unique to study an advancing glacier and its interactions with an active volcanic edifice. This research stay was a great experience and will help to finish my PhD project soon. |
