Report Total pressure data of sensors placed around tunnels show annual cycles of increasing and decreasing pressure with increasing and decreasing temperatures. To completely understand the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) system behaviour it is necessary to study to what extent these reversible pressure signals relate to the thermo-mechanical expansion of the adjacent rock formation. Therefore, it is needed to consider temperature changes in the laboratory program for swelling pressure tests.
Since the soil mechanical laboratory at RUB is not equipped to conduct temperature controlled swelling pressure tests, a research stay in Barcelona (UPC) was planned where a test setup was used, where the swelling pressure cell is coupled to a temperature control system. Important results for the THM behaviour where gained, resulting in an additional chapter for the PhD of the applicant and a joint conference paper of both groups.
