Report In Mexico, widespread groundwater concentrations of arsenic (As), uranium (U) and fluoride (F) above drinking water standards have been detected. Elevated concentrations have mostly been associated with volcanics rocks and basin fill sediments. However, the specific processes releasing these toxic elements into groundwater have only been determined in a few areas. This information is needed to understand the mechanisms of water-rock interaction that allow in some cases, and limit in others, the mobility of these elements in groundwater; it is of crucial importance for sustainable water management, especially in (semi-)arid regions like Mexico, where the groundwater is the main source for domestic drinking water supply, irrigation, and industrial activities.
In accordance with the PR.INT project submitted and accepted in June 2022, It was carried out a Research stay at the University of Cork Ireland from October 17 to November 22, 2022, with the purpose of making a microscale study of samples of volcanic rocks and basin-fill sediments, collected in the different study areas of the doctoral project, to detect the concentrations and sources of As, F and U.
