Report I spent three great months at VTT in Espoo, Finland. During my research stay, we implemented different steel production pathways (including the production of hydrogen needed for direct reduction) in the Energy System Model (ESM) Backbone. We also applied the combination of the ESM with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) that I had developed before, but had only applied to power systems. Steel is a basic material that is highly relevant in the transformation of energy systems (e.g. expansion of renewable energies) but also energy-intensive to produce and the current manufacturing process causes significant process-related greenhouse gas emissions. Different steel production paths were modeled between which the model can choose to determine an optimal future system. Backbone is used and LCA data is integrated to model the energy system and to find an optimal solution regarding system costs and different environmental impacts.
I am glad I got the chance to get to know and work together with great people at VTT and that we will continue the work we started together.
