Report |
In March 2023, with the support of the Research School, I was able to realise the first part of a project that is an essential cornerstone of my dissertation. This dissertation deals with questions concerning the economy and use of natural raw materials in Iron Age and Archaic western Sicily (c. 1000-500 BC). The material base that is indispensable for this question has now been collected and documented to a large extent during the stay in the archaeological park of Selinunte. The project deals in particular with architectural pottery finds, i.e. tiles, clay pipes and the like, which were produced on the edge of the archaic city of Selinunte. In order to investigate the economic network of the region, it will be analysed to which places the products from the workshops were traded. For this purpose, the finds were first sifted from the inventory of older excavations and promising examples were selected, which were then photographed, drawn, described and inventoried. In a second step, samples were taken and chemically characterised by means of X-ray fluorescence analysis. This specific signature can then be compared with finds from other sites to generate scientific evidence for an inter-regional trade network, which is ultimately an essential part of the dissertation project. |
