Report My dissertation project focuses on the history of the modern Middle East in the period between 1918 and 1946. I examine the transformation of the political economy and the social constitution of Bedouin tribal groups in the course of the formation of territorial states.

During my stay at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Ruhr-University Bochum, I focused on two case studies concerning important elite (shaykh) families in Syria and Iraq and their role in imperial and colonial politics during the late- and post-Ottoman periods.
I worked in close cooperation and regularly exchanged with Prof. Johann Büssow and other colleagues from the Institute. I presented my research results in the framework of a doctoral colloquium as well as in a meeting of the ERC-Project "LOOP" led by Prof. Johann Büssow. I also co-organized a methodological discussion session on Global and Micro-History.
Further, I have organized together with Prof. Johann Büssow from the RUB and Prof. Jordi Tejel from the University of Neuchâtel, a one-day workshop that will take place at the RUB on June 17, 2023, on "Current trends in Rural and Borderland Studies".
Another result of the cooperation with other scholars during my stay at the RUB is the configuration of a master seminar that I will teach together with Dr. David Jordan, researcher and assistant at the RUB, in the winter semester 2023/24.
