Report In April/May 2023, with the support of the Research School, I was able to realise the second part of a project that is an essential cornerstone of my dissertation. This dissertation deals with questions concerning the economy and use of natural raw materials in Iron Age and Archaic western Sicily (c. 1000-500 BC). During this stay in San Cipirello/PA I was able to investigate the comparative material, which was probably imported from the workshops of Selinunte to the indegenous settlement of Monte Iato in the hinterland of Sicily.
The project deals in particular with architectural pottery finds, i.e. tiles, clay pipes and the like, which were produced on the edge of the archaic city of Selinunte. In order to investigate the economic network of the region, it will be analysed to which places the products from the workshops were traded. For this purpose, the finds were first sifted from the inventory of older excavations and promising examples were selected, which were then photographed, drawn, described and inventoried. In a second step, the finds were chemically characterised by means of X-ray fluorescence analysis. This specific signature can then be compared with finds from Selinunte to generate scientific evidence for an inter-regional trade network, which is ultimately an essential part of the dissertation project.
