Report From January to June 2023, I was in Brussels for a six-month research stay. My host institution was the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) and its Flemish Primitives Study Centre.
The main purpose of the stay was to complete my dissertation on the painter Hans Memling. The KIK-IRPA and its various departments (documentation, conservation/restoration, laboratories) offer a unique environment for scientific exchange. I presented the results of my research to experts in the field of early Netherlandish painting and tested my theses. I presented my research in two lectures, one at the beginning (February) of my stay and one at the end (June).
The KIK-IRPA offered me a broad academic network in which I could present my work and place it within the current research landscape. At the same time, I was given exclusive access to the current research project on the painter Hans Memling (Musea Brugge), in which the KIK-IRPA is participating. I had access to the excellent documentation material on the aforementioned painter and was thus able to deepen my knowledge anew. At the same time, I participated in the open access digitisation project of the study centre (Friedlander Database).
