As the wave of digitalization sweeps across economies and societies, governments are gaining a deeper understanding of the immense value and potential power held within digital data. Data now serves as a critical driver of economic growth, fueling competition among various actors and challenging established notions of power structures, sovereignty, and security. Consequently, data governance has evolved into a fiercely contested political arena, influenced by diverging interests, norms, and values. This research project, therefore, aims to examine and compare the data governance models employed by the European Union and China. During the research stay, I conducted expert interviews with scholars from renowned institutions such as Fudan University (China), Kobe University (Japan), and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Additionally, I interviewed several practitioners from the legal field and official organizations, e.g., the Cyber Security Association of China. Conducting research in mainland China, especially on sensitive matters, required a personalized approach, relying on personal networks, and effective communication in the local language (Mandarin). The opportunity to visit mainland China proved invaluable, enriching the research project and enabling in-depth analysis. Furthermore, the field trip also opened up possibilities for ongoing collaboration, expansion, and the establishment of new partnerships involving RUB, the Faculty of East Asian Studies, and the Department of International Political Economy of East Asia.
