Report During the summer of 2023 I enjoyed a four month research stay at the University of Calgary, Canada. The PrInt funding of the research school enabled me to visit the lab of Prof. Wee Yong so I could learn many new methods, got to know how work is different in another research department and university and formed many new research contacts to other PhD students and postdocs. I was able to conduct my proposed plan of research so that I could enhance my knowledge about microglia and co-cultures as well as learn a new method for remyelination. Everyone at the host university and research group was very forthcoming so it was easy for me to learn from everyone and be part of the laboratory. I am looking forward to implementing the methods at RUB and to enhance my research output with these methods for my PhD project.
The living situation in Calgary is quite expensive compared to Europe, although Calgary is among the less expensive big cities of Canada. Room rentals are expensive and limited and fresh produce is very expensive, so prepare for higher living expenses for food etc. However, the city is very nice to live in and especially the vicinity to the Rocky Mountains with many national parks is great for outdoor activities in the free time.
