Workshop description
How can I make my research understandable outside my research community? Could my research be interesting or perhaps even useful to people in society, business or politics?
The workshop will give an answer by introducing science communication and public engagement as collaborative ways to transfer research knowledge to society and to engage members of the public with the design, conduct and dissemination of research. The workshop will offer valuable insights into what science communication and public engagement mean and how researchers can make their research knowledge open for discussions and developments in society.
You will discuss possible aims and purposes to publicly engage with research and will uncover strategies and ways to share your research with a broader non-research community. You will start identifying which topics, results or main outcomes of your research might be interesting for the public or non-academic stakeholders. You will also discuss benefits and challenges of actively involving multiple audiences and stakeholders from outside university incl. the broader public community in your research.
The workshop shares basic strategies and ways of science communication to support you in communicating your research to non-experts successfully. You will explore a variety of practices that help to transmit scientific ideas, methods, knowledge and research to non-expert audiences in an accessible, understandable or useful way.
Topics covered in the workshop include:
- basic understandings of research with and for society
- reflecting roles and responsibilities of researchers
- from information to collaboration: ways to engage multiple publics with research
- developing concepts and first strategies for your research projects
- discussing benefits and challenges associated with science communication
Trainer:
Dr. Annette Klinkert is the director of the European Science Engagement Association (EUSEA). She is an expert in science communication and public engagement and initiated and coordinated a large number of innovative international science communication formats, events and projects. She is regularly invited as lecturer and workshop-leader at national and international Science Communication events.
